A BRONZE COIN OF KARDIA


An enlargement of a bronze coin of Kardia

Kardian coin types of the fourth century BC commonly involved leonine symbolism, as in the reverse type used on this coin, perhaps representing the city itself or the Thracian Chersonesos in general.  The lion was an extremely popular emblem in the area and may have been adopted by Lysimachos as a personal badge when he became the ruler of Thrace.

Obverse: Head of Demeter facing right and wearing a wreath of grain.

Reverse: Lion standing to the left and gnawing on its prey.  In exergue: wheat grain and star. Inscription: KARDIA.
